How To Maintain Your Rain Gutters In Peterborough

How To Maintain Your Rain Gutters In Peterborough

Your rain gutters are an essential part of the roofing system for your home. The gutters funnel the rain and stormwater away from your home and its foundations. This protects your home from potential damp and flooding. However, cracked, blocked or clogged gutters can stop this water from travelling away from your home. This can lead to water damage down exterior walls of your home. It can also lead to excessive amounts of water cascading out of your gutters, causing damage to your home’s foundation and your garden. You need to maintain your rain gutters to avoid these problems.

How To Maintain Your Rain Gutters In Peterborough

The first step to maintain your rain gutters is to regularly clean them out. At least once a year you should clean out your gutters. This will enable the rainwater to flow freely along the gutters and away from your home. If you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself, call in the expert gutter cleaners. They have the tools to complete the job safely and efficiently.

It’s important that you clear out your downspouts as well as your gutters. Outlets can often become clogged with leaves, dirt and other debris. These blockages mean that the water from the gutters has nowhere else to go but over the sides of the gutter. A good way of checking for blockages is to use a garden hose and point it along the gutter. Watch the top of the downpipe to see how it flows down the downpipe. If the water is slow to go down, it’s likely you have as blockage in your downpipe and offsets that need to be removed.

Another way to keep your rain gutters in good condition is to perform that needed maintenance. Take a look at the gutters around your home. If you see they are bent or sagging, pulling away from the wall, rusting or corroded then they will need to be repaired.

If damaged gutters are not dealt with, they can become a more serious issue over time. If you spot any gutters that cause concern, call our team. We offer gutter cleaning and repairs across Peterborough and surrounding areas.

The better you maintain your rain gutters now; the less risk of expensive gutter repair work you will have in the future. Call us now to book your gutter clean and gutter inspection in Peterborough.

So, what happens when your gutters aren’t cleaned in the spring?

During the winter months the gutters around our home tend to fill up more. This includes heavy rainfall, as well as dirt, debris, leaves, twigs and more. These can become extremely problematic if they are not cleaned before the spring months arrive.

<yoastmark class=

Gutters are designed to allow water to flow freely off the roof of the building and away from the home. However, when they are blocked with dirt and debris, they can no longer allow water to flow freely. In addition to the heavy rain turning the debris into the gutter into a thick mulch – the gutters are holding more weight than they are designed to do.
This can result in gutters cracking and breaking or leaking.

Structural damage to your home is also possible as the gutters pull away from the wall. Water will flow over the gutters and around your property too as it can’t flow along your gutters. This can result to flooding and damage in your garden, leaks in your home and additional structural damage.
As you can imagine, all the damage caused when your gutters aren’t cleaned in spring can get very costly. A lot more costly than making a simple phone call to our gutter cleaning experts.

In this blog post we look at why March is a great month for gutter maintenance, repairs and cleaning. Not only are there weather benefits, but it also gets a yucky job off the to-do list at the beginning of the year too!

Why March Is A Great Month For Gutter Maintenance, Repairs and Cleaning

The milder temperatures of March make gutter maintenance easier. It’s not too cold that gutters are frozen, but it’s not too hot that you just want to enjoy your back garden and relaxing in the sun. The mild weather of March  makes for the perfect temperature to inspect, clean and repair your gutters.

Why March Is A Great Month For Gutter Maintenance, Repairs and Cleaning

Why March Is A Great Month For Gutter Maintenance, Repairs and Cleaning

While March brings milder temperatures, it has also bought heavy rains and even snow in the past. By having your gutters cleaned in March you can help avoid gutters becoming clogged from debris. This will help avoid gutters becoming heavy and straining on the foundations of your home. It will also help to avoid the risk of water damage to your walls and roof.
Another reason March is a great month for gutter maintenance, repairs and cleaning is that you can spend the rest of the year in smugness. You’ll know that your gutters are clean and clear. This means you are ready for whatever the British weather has to throw at your gutters. You won’t need to worry about gutters becoming blocked, overflowing or causing damage to your home. Why Use A Gutter Cleaning And Repair Company

Why Use A Gutter Cleaning And Repair Company

When you have a blocked gutter or notice a damaged gutter, it can be tempting to clean and repair it yourself. With all the sunny weekends and good weather, it may feel like time is on your side. However, it’s not just the time-consuming part of gutter cleaning or gutter repairs that you need to consider.

A blocked hopper

In this blog post we look at why you should use a gutter cleaning and gutter repair company, instead of doing it yourself.
If you are thinking of cleaning out or repairing your own gutters, there are a lot of things to think about. For example, when you repair or install guttering there needs to be an appropriate slope per metre of guttering. This will ensure the smooth and easy flow of the water. There are also different brands and sizes of guttering when it comes to repairs, some are compatible and some aren’t.

Why Use A Gutter Cleaning And Repair Company

In addition to this, the brackets need to be sufficiently placed along the guttering. This will ensure the guttering is properly supported to hold the water during heavy rain and any possible blockages. Remember, standing water and blockages can be extremely heavy. This is an extra weight on your guttering that needs support from brackets, or the guttering will bend and break.
You need to think about your safety too. While you may have cleaned the guttering on your garden shed in the past, it’s different on a home. There is a big difference in height. While your shed gutter may have been easy to reach, the same cannot be said for your home. This can mean that you are putting yourself in real danger reaching to heights. A gutter cleaning and repair company will have the correct tools, experience and knowledge. This means your safety, of which no price can be put on, is not at risk.
Here at Pristine Gutters, we have many years of experience cleaning, repairing and installing gutters in Peterborough and surrounding areas. We have the tools to safely, professionally and effectively clean your gutters.

Do I Need To Clean My Soffits?

Do I Need To Clean My Soffits?

The short answer to the question, do I need to clean my soffits is yes, and no. Your soffits do need to be cleaned. However, you don’t need to clean them yourself. Our team of professional gutter cleaning and soffit cleaning specialists can clean your soffits for you.

Do I Need To Clean My Soffits?

If you’re wondering what a soffit is, before you even start wondering about if it needs cleaning, then we can help. The word ‘soffit’ comes from a French term meaning ‘something fixed underneath’. With the clue being in the name, that is exactly where your soffit can be found. The soffits are underneath your fascia. If you stand outside and look up at your house, you will see them there.

Plastic soffits

Most homes will have  plastic soffits and they will need cleaning. They collect dirt. This could be dirt from the rain or the wind. It could even be dirt from birds, or just full of cobwebs. The plastic used in soffits can be slightly porous. This means that is can stain. That is why it is so important that you keep on top of cleaning your soffits to avoid this staining or discolouring from dirt.

When it comes to cleaning your soffits yourself, this should be done when they become dirty. You will need to use  water and rinse the soffits with a hose. If you don’t have a hose, then you could use a bucket with hot water to rinse and soften the dirt off the soffits. It is possible to use a jet washer, but just be aware of the pressure you are using. It’s a good idea to wear rubber gloves and safety glasses when rinsing your soffits.

Rinse off

Once the loose dirt has been rinsed off, you need to clean the soffits. This can be done with any of the numerous  cleaning agents that are on the market. Take your time to read reviews and see which  cleaner other people recommend. If you can add the cleaning solution to a spraying device this will make things easier. However, if that isn’t possible you will need to use your bucket and a brush or sponge. When the soffits have been cleaned with the cleaning solution you will need to rinse your soffits with water again.

Next up, you will want your soffits to look sparkling clean. It is likely that you will still have a few marks or stubborn spots here and there. You can mix hot water and washing-up liquid together in a bucker and scrub the marks with a scrubbing brush to get the marks off. A good bit of elbow grease should get these stubborn marks shifted. You’ll then want to polish the soffits with a microfibre cloth to leave a nice shine.

Clean fascia, soffits, and gutters

Alternatively, if this all sounds a bit too much – why not call in our team of gutter cleaning specialists? We can clear out and clean your gutters, fascia’s and soffits and downpipes with ease.

What’s Lurking In Your Gutters?

What’s Lurking In Your Gutters?

The thing about gutters is that they are out of sight, which can often mean they are also out of mind. However, there are lots of things that could be lurking in your gutters. Things like leaves, twigs and branches may be more obvious. However, tiles and concrete can also be found in gutters. They are blown from your roof by strong winds and then roll into your gutter. Perhaps you have a neighbour’s ball in there?
 What’s Lurking In Your Gutters?

What’s Lurking In Your Gutters?

These are all things that could be lurking in your gutter, unknown to you. However, when the rain falls, and your gutters are pouring water over the side, or the downpipes aren’t working – it could mean these things have blocked your gutters.

Overtime, this could result in serious blockages and even broken gutters or damage to your property due to the weight the gutters are holding.
That might not be all that is lurking in your gutters though. There may be insects and small animals in your gutters too. The twigs, leaves and branches we have mentioned make great blockages for gutters. However, they also make great nesting materials for insects, squirrels, mice and even birds in some cases. This is commonly seen in the colder winter months when these rodents and best needs somewhere warm to stay and breed.

What’s Lurking In Your Gutters?

This can then lead to more issues for your gutters. The extra weight of the animals in their nests can force the gutters to crack, bulge or break. The nests will also cause further blockages to your gutters which will stop the water flowing along them and through the down pipe with ease.
By having your gutters cleaned regularly and efficiently you can avoid things lurking in your gutters.
Our gutter cleaning specialists will clean out and clear your gutters to leave them free of debris for
free-flowing rain water. This then makes your gutters less attractive to pests and rodents, therefore
further protecting your gutters.

How To Spot Damage From A Lack Of Gutter Cleaning

If you don’t book regular gutter cleans on your property, you will likely end up with blocked gutters. This will then lead to standing water. The dead leaves and branches from nearby trees will fall into your gutters.
Alternatively if the water can’t flow away, it can penetrate through windows, doors or any unexpected places, due to it overflowing.

However, with a regular gutter clean in Peterborough the issue of blockages can be prevented before it becomes a bigger, more serious and even dangerous problem for you, your home and your family.

Gutter Cleaning

If you put off your gutter cleaning this can result in damage to your roof as well. This can even lead to serious leaks into your home. Any water that isn’t able to flow along your gutters can accumulate on your roof.
This can then soak through your roof and cause significant damage to the roof, your loft and your home.
Visually inspecting your gutters before the wet and rainy weather is highly recommended. This will help spot any potential damage before the rain starts. However, there are three main ways that you can spot any damage from a lack of gutter cleaning. Look out for them during or after wet weather.

Spot any damage from a lack of gutter cleaning

• Can you see water where it shouldn’t be? You might spot puddled in your garage, leaks in your home or stains on your wall for example. These are major tell-tale signs that your home is at risk of serious damage.
Damp patch caused by a leaking gutter

Water damage

• Have you spotted leaking gutters or are your gutters not draining at all? Gutters or drains that are not flowing smoothly could be a sign that there is a blockage in your gutters. This needs to be looked at sooner rather than later to avoid serious damage.
• Spotted puddles of water in the garden around your home or on your driveway? If you notice puddles of standing water around your home this is likely to be a sign of a blocked gutter.  The water is unable to flow along the gutter and through the downpipe, so it pours over the side of the gutter into puddles around your home.
